Every household hates it in the situation of clogged drains which is otherwise known as blocked drains. It is normally a bad experience and no fun going through it, as you are absolutely repulsed because there could be a bad smell and the ground could be wet or slimy in some cases.
A blocked drain can lead to slow water drainage, flooding, corrosion, and so on, which might need repairs that will be on the high side. When it happens, the first thing to do is carry out what is known as drain inspection, where you can troubleshoot the real problem, that is, what lead to the blockage. This will help you to know where to focus on.
Usually, blocked drains start as a minor issue that can become a serious problem if not addressed on time.
Below are Some of the Causes of Clogged Drains:
- Dirt:
This is one of the major causes of clogged drains. Most of the times, we think we can wash virtually anything into the drain, including some bulky dirt. Over the time, they will build up in the drain and later become an issue you to deal with. So always avoid such bulky dirt going through your drain so as not to experience it.
- Soap:
Most people think this is not possible, but I tell you that soap usually causes a blockage in the drain. Some of the soap we use is traditionally made and they contain components like fat or grease. And from the Chemistry point of view, the fat component of the soap usually combines with some minerals in water thereby causing a solid residue otherwise known as soap scum. This scum can easily block your pipes.
To avoid this, sometimes do more of soap free washing and allow water to flow through your drain with some pressure, this will help to clear off some of these scum that is building up.
- Hair:
This another common cause of clogged drain. Hair usually binds up with grease and different sticky substances which will lead to the formation of clogs. Allowing hair to get into your drains can be prevented in order to avoid this problem. And one easy way of doing this is by putting drain guards on your drains where that hair can gather for removal.
- Minerals Build Up:
This is common when the water is hard, as some minerals dissolve in it, which leads to the build-up of some insoluble masses. These have the capacity to block the drain. If the water coming through your water system is hard, you need to have what is known as the water softener to avoid this problem. But if you can’t afford that, you need to regularly remove the build-up or sediment either by yourself or call a plumber for a professional help
- Food Waste:
Instead of allowing food waste to pass through your drain, make use of your garbage disposal. I think these are bulky in most cases and the problems that may arise from allowing them to go through the drain can be avoided. Even when the food waste is not bulky, it can gather and build up with time. So, make it a habit of using your disposal bin for any food waste no matter the size.
- Toilet Paper Build Up:
When there are too much of toilet paper clogs, it can block the drains and prevent water from going through the drain. When this happens, you might need to seek the services of a plumber for your blocked toilet. But if water can still run through the toilet drain when flushed, you can just use a plunger dissolve and shift some of these clogged toilet papers.
As a matter of fact, there are few other causes but these six explained above are very important.
And if they are avoided, you might not have to face any issue as regards drain repair for a very long time.
